In simple terms, by adding a short search name representing a website before your keywords, you can access hundreds of search engines using just one search box. The gateway interprets the search name and directs you to the preset search engine. For instance, Navino uses “b” for Google’s blog search. So, if I'm searching for Linux-related topics, I simply enter “b Linux” in the search box, and the gateway takes me directly to Google’s blog search with the keyword Linux.
Navino already has predefined tags for many popular search engines, using one-letter codes for simplicity. Some examples include Google, Yahoo’s stock information, Weather.com’s forecasts, and Dictionary.com’s searches. Additionally, you can suggest new search tags for websites, though these need approval to ensure they are of broad public interest.
In cases where the search engines I want are not in Navino’s public database, I can create private search tags for personal use. These don’t require approval and can be used immediately.
Another handy trick is defining private search tags as shortcuts to my favorite websites. For example, I use “h” for Hotmail.com. When I want to check my email, I simply type “h” into the search box, and it directs me there instantly.
