It's hard to believe it all began nearly a year ago. Time truly flies when you're engrossed in a new venture, especially one as puzzling as starting an Internet store. My wife and I thought dabbling in e-commerce would be a fun side business alongside my Professional Engineering and Contracting career. Given my moderate computer skills, how tough could it be? I assumed there must be a straightforward guide that would propel us to success.
Little did I know, the online world is vastly different from the absolute certainties I’m accustomed to as an engineer. Everyone claims to be an expert, yet no one seems to agree on anything. How can perceived realities differ so wildly?
In truth, the “Internet Reality” is dictated by search engines and their secretive algorithms. Those truly in the know aren't likely to share their insights anytime soon. Thus, our understanding is often reactive and speculative. I made several blunders while setting up our first store before realizing this. Unwittingly, I was following a seemingly functional approach that clashed with search engine dynamics, limiting our potential success. Eventually, I conceded, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
My missteps began right at the start when I bought a third-party PHP shopping cart and uploaded it to a reputable hosting service. I expected a seamless process and thought we’d be selling products in no time. It quickly became clear that I needed a solid grasp of PHP to tweak the cart, and, frustratingly, our page requests timed out nearly 60% of the time. To be fair, there are many quality software solutions out there, but choosing the right one is the challenge.
In frustration, I decided to try something suggested by WorldWide Brands and opened a Yahoo Store. I also got the first edition of Online Store Profits and followed its guidance. We were up and running quickly. Then, I purchased Arelis for link management, IBP 8 for site optimization, and IDevAffiliate for affiliate tracking. While there are other options, these have worked well for us. Our search engine visibility and sales steadily improve, making life pretty good, and we're satisfied with our choices.
I share this story because admitting mistakes is healthy, especially if it helps others avoid similar pitfalls. Never rely solely on others' opinions; always do your own research.
Until my next update, have a great day!
