How to Succeed with Niche Research for Online Wealth
Introduction
In the first article of this series, we covered compiling a list of potential niches for your site or blog. Hopefully, you now have a broad list of categories. The next steps are refining your keywords and conducting supply and demand research.
Using Keyword Tools
There are plenty of keyword tools available. I prefer Overture for its simplicity and zero cost. However, be cautious of its inflated numbers, as similar queries might get counted as one, like "fly" and "flies." This inflation can mislead advertisers about search term popularity.
Keyword Search Example
Let’s explore a general term like “dogs.” Here’s what Overture reveals:
- Searches in February 2006:
- 1,104,234 - dog
- 225,786 - dog breed
- 183,180 - dog training basics
- …and more
I edited out irrelevant results for clarity. Notice the high demand for "dog breeds" and "dog training basics." With this demand data, we'll now check supply on Google.
Checking Supply with Google
Enter exact search terms in quotes on Google, like "dog breeds." This returns around 5,590,000 results.
Understanding the Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI)
SEO expert Sumantra Roy developed the Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) to measure keyword potential. A simplified version is:
\[ KEI = \frac{\text{Demand}}{\text{Supply}} \]
The higher the KEI, the better. It ranges from 1-10, with each increase exponentially better.
- Example: "Dog breed" has a KEI of 0.04, which isn’t impressive.
- "Dog Training Basics" results in 45,600 Google results, giving a KEI of 4?"quite promising.
Exploring More Keywords
Test more keywords like "dog name," which has a KEI of 0.10, and "dog gift," with a KEI of 0.07. Aim to select high-KEI keywords and re-evaluate them with Overture.
Using Other Tools
Wordtracker offers automated KEI calculations. It's worth a try for free, though it uses slightly different data sources.
Conclusion
Refine your list now to focus on keywords with the highest potential. This streamlined approach boosts your chances of success in finding a profitable online niche.
