Online Home Businesses: A Cautionary Tale About Scams
Summary
Recently, I was reminded of the lengths scammers will go to exploit individuals searching for online home business opportunities. The Deception
Scammers target job seekers by scanning online resumes for personal data, sometimes even finding social security numbers to fraudulently apply for credit cards. They also impersonate potential employers, requesting personal information under the guise of pre-interview checks, leading to identity theft and financial woes.
While some of these tactics might seem like common sense to avoid, desperation for a job can make a seemingly legitimate phone call persuasive enough to extract sensitive information.
A Personal Experience
Years ago, I experienced an attempted scam while selling a used car. After placing an online ad, a seemingly interested buyer from the UK contacted me. He offered a bank check for the car plus shipping, despite never seeing the vehicle. I would receive the check, deposit it, and then forward money to a shipping broker.
Initially elated at the sale, I became skeptical: Why would someone overseas pay full price and incur shipping fees without seeing the car? It raised red flags.
An internet search confirmed my suspicions?"it was a common scam. Thankfully, I stopped before sending any money, avoiding potential loss of the car and additional funds.
Lessons Learned
I didn't have special insight; it just didn't feel right. It's like avoiding a dark alley at night if something seems off. Trust your instincts and investigate further if uneasy.
Scammers thrive when people aren't aware of their tactics. For instance, many don't realize bank checks can be fraudulent. Emotions like entitlement can also blindside us?"I felt I deserved the full price for the car, making the offer more tempting.
Before parting with money online, research thoroughly. Most transactions withstand a day or two of scrutiny to confirm legitimacy.
