Why Making Money Online is Tough
Summary
At a recent Internet conference, my sons and I realized one of the biggest challenges in Internet marketing: information overload.Article Body
During a recent Internet conference where my sons and I were teaching, I was reminded of a major challenge we all face in Internet marketing: information overload.
A Day in the Life of an Internet Marketer
9 am: You sit at your computer, ready to create a new website, convinced it's your most profitable project yet. But first, you check your emails.
You sift through about fifty junk emails until a message from a well-known internet marketing guru catches your eye. He claims he knows the secret to Internet marketing success and charges just $49 for this invaluable knowledge?"an offer you can’t resist. So, you promptly purchase the eBook. As you start reading, a phone call interrupts you. After dealing with a telemarketer, you return to the computer. What was I doing again? Oh right, a virus scan seems necessary. While it runs, you grab a coffee.
10 am: The virus scan is clear. Now to start on that website?"but wait, let's check emails again.
Here's a new system that promises $40,000 overnight while you sleep. Curiosity leads you to the website, where you discover it’s just another program suggesting you write an eBook on Internet marketing. Not interested.
You recall something Frank mentioned about using public domain reports. Off you go to find that report. Got it, but decide to move on for now.
11 am: Time to refocus on work. An email arrives, claiming your current strategy is outdated and urging you to buy new software to avoid going broke online.
You purchase the software immediately.
12 pm: It's lunchtime. The website will have to wait.
The Struggle is Real
Sound familiar? Unfortunately, this scenario is all too common. There are endless ways to make money, drive traffic, or achieve any goal online, bombarding us with tempting offers at every turn.
Many opportunities are valuable and could yield income if only we focused on one and devoted a few months to it. The issue is that distractions abound, preventing most of us from concentrating on the ONE project we need to complete before moving on.
Developing discipline to resist enticing offers is crucial. Here are five tips to combat information overload:
1. Schedule Email Checks: Designate specific times to check emails rather than doing it all day.
2. Commit to One Project: Decide on one website, eBook, or program to develop and stick with it. Integrate helpful tools if they align with your current project; otherwise, save them in a "Future Projects" folder for later.
3. Make a To-Do List: Prioritize tasks like this article, which topped my list today because it was timely.
4. Identify Your Most Productive Time: Dedicate your most efficient hours to important tasks. Mine are typically from 10 pm to midnight.
Even juggling a full-time job, consistency is the key. Allocate regular time weekly to your online endeavors.
5. Focus on One Opportunity at a Time: Resolve to tackle one project until it succeeds or proves ineffective. If it fails, evaluate why?"maybe it’s promotion, layout, or content issues?"and avoid repeating mistakes.
My sons and I succeed in various online ventures, but success always boils down to one thing: focus.
I could elaborate more, but you get the point. This entire article can be distilled into one word:
FOCUS
