How often does the average entrepreneur modify their business plan? A frequent error among new businesses is adhering too rigidly to their initial plan. Instead, a business plan should serve as a guide, motivating continual development and enhancement of the final product.

Six years ago, I embarked on a mission to provide free online information about Boston nightlife. My hope was to generate enough traffic to earn some advertising revenue.

Initially, I developed prototypes but struggled to complete them due to my struggles with what's commonly known as A.D.D. (Another Day Dreaming). Fortunately, after being prescribed Strattera, I found the focus and drive to complete tasks effectively.

Back in 2006, I created neEvent, short for New England Event. My vision was to offer comprehensive online information about nightclubs, restaurants, lounges, sports, music, family, and adult entertainment events. I aimed to enable users to join VIP guest lists for these events. This was the core of my strategy to attract users and eventually generate revenue. After months of planning, development, and testing, I launched the site in February, setting up newsletters and event alerts to gather email addresses and contact information.

By May, progress had exceeded my expectations despite minimal advertising, marketing, and search engine exposure. However, I realized the need to make the platform more engaging, encouraging users to return beyond just browsing events and joining guest lists.

Everywhere I looked, MySpace was booming. It was clear that integrating a social dimension could enhance my platform's appeal. In about an hour, I conceptualized a social event portal. Within a week, I integrated it with the neEvent website. This allowed registered users to add themselves to event or guest lists and view profiles of others attending the same events. Users could connect based on shared interests and arrange to meet at events.

That, to me, is true social networking!
