Escape to Serenity
Ever felt the urge to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Back in March/April 1978, Mother Earth News shared an inspiring story about a couple who did just that by purchasing McLeod's Island?"a 90-acre paradise off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Living sustainably on the island, they kept a few animals and minimized grocery expenses, relying largely on the island's resources. However, island life wasn't without its trials. As they put it:
> "The sea, you know, is not called 'restless' for nothing. We've witnessed a glass-smooth bay transform into a windswept chaos of currents and combers in seconds. We've also watched the bay thaw and refreeze within hours on a single December day.
> Winters here can be unpredictable. In 1976, frequent thaws kept the bay slushy and impassable, leaving us marooned for three months. Conversely, last winter's cold snap froze the bay solid, allowing us to trek to the mainland for mail and supplies."
Today, the internet affords many of us the freedom to work from anywhere. This couple, however, didn't have that luxury. Unfortunately, there’s no current information about them?"perhaps the tides carried them away.
Life is full of sacrifices, some more significant than others. As for me, island ownership isn’t on the horizon.
