Do Search Engines Care About Valid HTML?
Summary
As a web developer, I've recently heard a lot about the significance of valid HTML. It seems essential for accessibility, browser stability, and ease of indexing by search engines. But does valid HTML actually improve search engine rankings? To explore this, I validated every page of my latest site design and conducted a small experiment.
Experiment
I began by downloading the Firefox HTML Validator Extension, which indicates if a page’s HTML is valid. I then used the Yahoo! Buzz Index to find the top five most-searched terms?"World Cup 2006, WWE, FIFA, Shakira, and Paris Hilton. I searched each term on Google, Yahoo!, and MSN, checking the top 10 results for HTML validity. This provided 150 data points.
Results
The results were surprising: only 7 out of 150 pages had valid HTML (4.7%), while 97 had warnings (64.7%), and 46 had serious errors (30.7%). This trend was consistent across search engines and search terms. Google validated 4 out of 50 results (8%), MSN had 3 of 50 (6%), and Yahoo! had none. Notably, none of the search engine homepages validated, although MSN’s results page did.
Furthermore, high-traffic sites like ESPN.com, IMDB, and MySpace also didn’t validate.
Conclusion
The data suggests that valid HTML is not currently a significant factor in search engine rankings. While there are excellent reasons to use valid HTML?"such as accessibility and browser compatibility?"it likely won’t boost your search position on its own. Despite this, I still recommend that developers validate their sites for the many other benefits it offers.
