Backgammon Rules: Learn How to Play
Overview
Backgammon is one of the oldest board games, with roots tracing back to Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Rome. Over time, the game has evolved and spread globally, becoming a beloved pastime in the US, East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
What You Need
To play backgammon, you'll need:
- A partner
- Two dice
- A backgammon board with checkers
The board is divided into two sides, each with 12 triangles called points, numbered from 1 to 24.
Board Layout
- Points 1 to 6: Home Board (Inner Board)
- Points 7 to 12: Outer Board
- 7 Point: Bar Point
- 13 Point: Mid Point
Starting the Game
In the beginning, each player places:
- 2 checkers on the 24 point
- 3 checkers on the 8 point
- 5 checkers on the 13 and 6 points
Players move their checkers from their home board through the outer board toward the opponent's home board.
Objective
The aim is to move all your checkers to the opponent's home board and then remove them from the board before your opponent can do the same.
Gameplay
First Move
- Both players throw one die.
- The one with the higher roll makes the first move, using both their own and the opponent’s dice numbers.
- If tied, roll again until there is a winner.
Moving Checkers
- Roll both dice on your turn.
- Move checkers forward by the numbers on each die.
- You can move one checker by the total of both dice or split the moves between two checkers.
- For example, with a roll of 5 and 4, move one checker 9 spaces or one 5 spaces and another 4 spaces.
Doubles
Rolling a double lets you move double the amount rolled.
- With double 2s, move 2 points four times.
- Move one checker 8 spaces, or distribute the moves among several checkers as allowed.
Capturing and the Bar
- Move a checker to a point occupied by one or none of your opponent’s checkers (a blot).
- Hitting a blot sends the opponent's checker to the bar, the central divider on the board.
- Barred checkers are out of play until re-entered on a roll corresponding to the opponent's home board.
Bearing Off
When all your checkers are on your home board, remove them using dice rolls.
- Roll 1: Bear off from the 1 point.
- Roll 2: Bear off from the 2 point, and so on.
Winning
- Gammon: Win by bearing off all your checkers before your opponent bears off any.
- Backgammon: Win by bearing off all your checkers while your opponent still has checkers on the bar or in your home board.
Enjoy mastering backgammon, a game of strategy and skill!
