My Close Call with an eBay Scam

I've recently been reading about numerous cases where people become victims of scammers on eBay. A few years ago, I, too, encountered a scam when someone tried to swindle £170 from me. Thankfully, I managed to get it back, but not everyone is as fortunate.
For several months, I had been enjoying buying and selling items on eBay without any issues. My main focus was selling second-hand mobile phones, which was surprisingly profitable with minimal effort. Whenever I purchased anything over £100, I'd usually meet the seller in person, often at a location just off the motorway. This approach allowed me to snag good deals and unload items I no longer needed.
However, my smooth experience was abruptly disrupted, and I was caught off guard despite my caution.
One day, while browsing eBay, I spotted a second-hand mobile phone listed for a "Buy It Now" price that was attractive yet not suspiciously low. Priced at £170, I was confident I could resell it for a £50 profit.
The ad included a phone number for inquiries. I called and spoke to a man named Tony, who seemed friendly and answered all my questions. He mentioned he couldn't meet in person because he didn’t have a driver’s license yet. In hindsight, this was a red flag, but I ignored it.
Because Tony lived far from me, I reluctantly agreed to make a bank transfer. He promised to send the phone via Royal Mail Special Delivery, ensuring it would arrive by noon the next day. He appeared trustworthy, or so I thought.
As you might expect, the phone never arrived?"not the next day, nor any day after. Attempts to reach Tony via email, text, and calls went unanswered.
Realizing I'd been duped, I decided to contact the police. They were supportive, and although they registered my case and provided a crime number, they warned me it was unlikely I'd recover my money. Apparently, they frequently received such complaints about eBay scams, so I wasn't alone.
Outside the police station, I texted Tony with the crime number. To my surprise, he called back, angrily ranting but eventually agreed to refund my money if I dropped the police action.
I was fortunate. As the police noted, many never see their money again after falling for such scams.
