Sex, Lies, and eBay
Word Count: 729
Summary:
There’s a lot of eBay information and noise online. How do you know what to trust?
Article Body:
I recently watched a movie called Shattered Glass, based on the true story of Steven Glass, a writer for The New Republic, a renowned political magazine. In 1998, he became notorious when it was uncovered that much of his writing for the magazine was fabricated. As a rising star, he had penned dozens of high-profile articles for various national publications, often inventing facts or sources.
Steven’s world unraveled when his article Hack Heaven was exposed as fiction by Forbes reporter Adam Penenberg. Glass had gone to great lengths to deceive fact-checkers by creating fake websites, voicemail accounts, and notes. He was promptly fired.
Recently, Steven published a biographical novel, The Fabulist, to provide his perspective and excuses for deceiving his employers, friends, and the public. He’s done interviews with shows like 60 Minutes. Today, he continues to profit from his past actions.
eBay has also experienced monumental changes since its inception. I’ve been selling on the platform since its early days in 1995. Back then, during a tech support call, I was connected directly from the receptionist to the server room, where I spoke with Pierre, the founder. Things have evolved significantly since then.
I spend most of my day on the internet?"selling products, writing books, and creating websites for income. However, a large portion of my time is dedicated to research, trying to sift through the internet’s vast wasteland to create my own oasis.
Mentioning eBay often evokes strong opinions. Even my mother, who doesn't own a computer, has an impression of eBay?"because eBay symbolizes money. Many believe they can quit their jobs and earn a living on eBay. It’s quite a marketing feat.
Don’t get me wrong. If you want to clear out your attic, eBay is the place. If you want to make some cash from garage sales, that’s possible too. But if you’re looking for a full-time, bill-paying job with benefits, you might be better off staying at Wal-Mart.
Watching Shattered Glass resonated with me concerning eBay’s current state. I purchase numerous eBooks monthly, filled with get-rich-quick ideas. I have Auctions For Income sitting right here on my shelf. What do these books have in common? They often contain outdated information. Good ideas for their time, but not necessarily effective today.
People making big money on eBay rarely share their secrets. Would you? They exploit their strategies to the fullest, then sell an eBook promising riches for $29.95. The truth is, honesty isn’t always sexy. eBay is alluring, and so are the stories. It’s like buying a lottery ticket?"dreaming of fortune and glory. That’s why many never questioned the veracity of Steven Glass’s stories; his fabrications were too enticing.
There’s certainly money to be made on eBay, and yes, some make a living from it. However, the days of easy, overnight success are gone. Now, traditional business principles prevail. Finding a niche, working it diligently, and constantly seeking the next opportunity should be your routine. Conduct good business, score occasional wins, and be grateful.
Don’t fall for lies just because they sound appealing. Keep your feet on the ground.
