Gagged While Giving Birth: A Controversial Practice
Childbirth is undeniably painful, and while experiences vary, I firmly believe that enduring this pain is part of the process. Recently, I read a disturbing article linking L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, to a controversial childbirth practice. Many celebrities, including Tom Cruise, are followers of Scientology, and this prompted me to write about the practice of gagging women during childbirth.
First, let me extend congratulations to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who are expecting their first child. However, I find myself questioning the rules of Scientology concerning childbirth, particularly the insistence on silence during delivery.
While expecting a baby is joyous, the reality is that childbirth involves significant pain for pregnant women. During labor, the partner typically supports by offering comfort, while the woman endures tremendous physical challenges. Scientology mandates that women remain silent during labor and refuse pain relief, a rule that seems devoid of compassion.
This approach adds unnecessary stress to an already challenging experience. Women in labor are vulnerable, and being pressured by external rules can dangerously divert their focus from medical guidance. In some cases, adherence to these rules might even lead to life-threatening situations for both mother and child.
It's crucial to seek medical advice during pregnancy, not guidance from writers or celebrities. Just as you wouldn't consult your neighbor for a toothache, trust medical professionals for childbirth.
Childbirth has inherent risks, and while it often results in tears of joy, following impractical dictates can overshadow these moments with pain. The analogy is simple: just as actors use stunt doubles, women should have the choice to ease their pain.
Scientology claims that a mother's groans can affect the baby's sanity, an unfounded notion that I find hard to accept. Instead, let's value the expertise of doctors and surgeons who safely bring children into the world, often born to mothers who didn't suppress their natural reactions.
Ultimately, if expressing pain means more professionals like doctors, nurses, and teachers exist, then let women express it freely. We should trust those who are trained to help, not those who offer unqualified advice.
