Your Dog Is Hyperactive When You Get Home From Work... What Should You Do?

Summary
Dear Adam,
I'm a member of the Bouvtrain list and found your name there. I'm almost done reading your book, and it's given me some great ideas. I have a 1 1/2-year-old Bouvier named Gypsy, who is quite high-strung, but we’re working on it. You’re right: sending her away for training didn’t help much. I spent $900, and now she only listens to the trainer. However, I’m getting better at managing her.
I exercise her in the morning. We play ball for 30 minutes, followed by a mile-long walk where we practice sits, downs, and stays. In the evening, we play ball for about 15 minutes. I work from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. During that time, Gypsy stays in the kitchen with access to a fenced backyard. She sleeps most of the day but is restless at night, pacing and barking. I use baby gates to keep her in the kitchen so I can sleep, but I haven’t had a full night’s rest in months. She has hip dysplasia and had surgery, so I tried giving her aspirin, but it didn’t help. Got any advice? Would crating her work?
Thanks,
Robbye and Gypsy
Dear Robbye,
Thanks for reaching out. Ignoring bad behavior in dogs who prioritize their own satisfaction rarely works.
Here are some suggestions:
1. Address the Barking:
- When she starts barking, firmly say “No!” from your bedroom. Continue reinforcing with “No, no, no!” and then go to her and correct the behavior. Even if she returns to her bed, using “No!” as a marker helps her associate it with the behavior.
2. Crate Training:
- Consider placing a crate in your bedroom. Dogs see sleeping together as quality time and this might help reduce her anxiety.
3. Leash in the Bedroom:
- Attach her leash to the foot of your bed at night. If she knows a down-stay, correct her when she gets up. After a few nights, she’ll learn that she needs to stay put.
4. Exercise:
- Increase her exercise routine, especially after work. Play ball for at least 30 minutes, ideally an hour. If that’s not feasible, engage her in an intense obedience routine for about 15 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of play.
5. My Experience:
- When I lived in Berkeley, I had a high-energy Pit Bull. Even after an hour of fetch, she’d be restless. However, after a 20-minute intense obedience session, she’d settle and be calm for hours.
Increasing both physical and mental activity can help address Gypsy’s restlessness. These strategies should help you both find more peace at night.
Best,
Adam
