Tire Jump Foundation Training for Your Dog
Introduction
Training your dog to conquer the Tire Jump in agility courses can be challenging but rewarding. Many dogs initially avoid it, preferring to go under or around. With the right foundational training, you can ensure success.Start with the Basics
Begin by introducing the Tire Jump in a fun and simple way for your dog. If your dog knows the sit-stay command, place them about 2 feet from the tire. Stand on the opposite side and call, “Come Tire.” If they hesitate, use a treat or toy to encourage them through. Practice this repeatedly until they approach the tire confidently.Gradually increase the distance. Position your dog 6 feet away, and you move back as well. Practice calling them from various angles and distances. Once your dog can successfully complete the jump 80% of the time from different positions, it’s time to increase the challenge.
Teach “Go Tire”
Next, train the “Go Tire” command. Start close to the tire, about 3 feet away, with both you and your dog facing it. Command, “Go Tire.” Reward them if they jump through. If they’re hesitant, step forward, pointing to the tire, and say, “Go Jump.” Some dogs respond to this prompt. If they still don’t move, throw a toy or treat through the tire while saying, “Go Tire.” Repeat until they go through independently. Gradually move farther away, progressing up to 30 feet.
Adjusting Tire Height
If you’re training a young dog, keep the tire height low initially (8” or 12”). For older, larger dogs, begin at this height and gradually increase. Reintroduce “Come Tire” and “Go Tire” commands as you raise the height. If your dog tries to go under, use wire mesh or angled jump bars to guide them correctly. When preparing for competitions, set the tire slightly higher than competition height for practice. Consistent preparation and practice are key to success.
With patience and practice, your dog will confidently master the Tire Jump, enhancing their agility skills and building a stronger bond with you.
