Submissive Urination in Young Dogs
Overview
I have an 11-month-old English Springer Spaniel named Rio. Over the past nine months, I've tried various training methods like clicker training and the gentle leader without success. A trainer even suggested that Rio was untrainable, but I knew my smart pup had potential.
Following some advice, I bought an electronic collar and a pinch collar.
Results
In just two days, Rio became a well-behaved dog. She no longer runs wild or jumps on furniture. She walks calmly by my side and sits with me in the evenings. It's been a remarkable change.
The Remaining Challenge
The only issue left is Rio's submissive urination. This occurs about once every two weeks, often when I put her leash on. Any advice on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

Expert Advice
Dear Maryann,
Great to hear about your success with Rio!
Regarding submissive urination, ensure there's no bladder or urinary tract infection. Assuming that's clear, the best approach is to ignore the behavior. Dogs usually outgrow this as they mature. Submissive urination often happens when a dog is excited and unaware of its actions, making correction difficult.
Try to keep Rio calm until you're outside. She will outgrow this behavior in time. It's unrelated to housebreaking.
