Every week, I set aside time for grooming my dogs. We jokingly call it "ablutions," a nod to my once-obsessive reading of Regency Romance novels. According to Webster's Dictionary, "ablutions" refers to washing the body, often as a religious ritual.
While we don’t bathe them completely every week?"since frequent baths can be harsh on a dog's skin and fur?"we have a grooming routine. This includes nail trimming, brushing fur and teeth, cleaning ears, and washing their faces. Our breeds, Brussels Griffons, Boston Terriers, and French Bulldogs, require special care for their skin folds, beards, and wrinkles.
Our routine is efficient; it takes about 15 minutes per dog. One person holds the pet while the other does the grooming. The benefits are clear: the dogs are happier, they smell fresh, and we check them for anything unusual.
Contrary to popular belief, clean, healthy dogs should not have a strong odor. If your dog has bad breath, it might mean their teeth need attention. There are many products available for canine dental care; starting with a damp washcloth or gauze can be effective. Use dog-specific toothpaste, as human ones can be too harsh and unpleasant for them.
Your sense of smell is vital in assessing your dog's health. Any odor from the ears may indicate an infection. We use a vet-recommended solution to clean their ears, which effectively removes dirt and wax. Applying it, however, can be tricky. Our Boston Terrier is particularly resistant, despite years of practice. No matter how we try to explain, she remains unconvinced that she can't see inside her own ears!
Trimming a dog's nails is another challenging task. Many fear cutting too close and causing pain. A handheld sanding device can be an alternative, but use a gentle touch. Power tools are powerful, and it's better to be cautious. If you're unsure about trimming, many groomers and veterinarians offer this service for a small fee. Regardless, inspect your dog's paws for calluses, cracks, or abnormalities.
Finally, thorough brushing not only manages tangles and mats but also distributes natural oils for healthy fur. It also removes dead fur. Through brushing, we discovered a growth on our Brussels Griffon, leading to a vet visit and stitches. Early detection is crucial for both humans and dogs.
Our weekly grooming sessions may not be as fun as playing fetch, but they're invaluable time spent with our pets. Getting them used to the routine requires patience, but our furry friends are absolutely worth the effort.
