Throughout my life, I've shared my home with many dogs, each cherished in their own way, yet I never quite found the ideal breed. My goal was a dog that was great with children but could also serve as a dependable watchdog. After some research, I discovered the Boxer?"a breed that met all my expectations. Now, I'm the proud owner of two white Boxers: Murphy and Rico. Though they have distinct personalities, with one being protective and the other quite laid-back, they both bring endless joy.
The Affectionate Boxer
Boxers are incredibly affectionate, greeting their humans with enthusiastic wiggles and plenty of kisses. They see themselves as lap dogs and love to lean against you, in what’s affectionately termed the "Boxer lean," using their full weight.
Energetic and Stubborn
These dogs are highly active and require daily exercise. Although Boxers can be stubborn and challenging to train, obedience classes are beneficial. Despite their stubbornness, they are eager to please. Keep in mind, Boxers tend to drool, so if cleanliness is a priority, this might not be the breed for you.
Unique Challenges of White Boxers
White Boxers face specific issues. They can't be shown at AKC events or registered with the AKC, nor should they be bred. Due to their lack of pigmentation, they are susceptible to sunburn and skin problems. They are also prone to hearing loss. Responsible breeders often require a promise to spay or neuter these dogs.
Despite a common belief that white Boxers are rare, they're not just a novelty. Ethical breeders care about the dog's welfare and will often place them in good homes with minimal or no cost.
Attributes and Training
Boxers are bold, courageous, and protective yet also good-natured and enthusiastic. They thrive in obedience programs, therapy work, agility competitions, and serve as excellent watchdogs. However, without proper training, their mischievous nature can lead to poor behavior. Owners need to invest time and effort into training to ensure a healthy and well-behaved pet.
Choosing the Right Puppy
When selecting a puppy, look for one that is outgoing and playful. Avoid timid or aggressive puppies and check their surroundings for cleanliness. A healthy puppy should have a clean, soft coat, clear eyes, pink ears, and firm pink gums. A reputable breeder will discuss any health concerns openly.
A Rewarding Commitment
Owning a Boxer is not for everyone. They require dedicated owners willing to invest in their well-being. Without proper training, Boxers can be troublesome, but with it, they become exceptional companions, offering unconditional love and becoming beloved family members.
