How to Improve Your Dog's Stay on the Agility Starting Line
Summary:
Understanding why your dog's start-line stay deteriorates is essential. Remember, "stay" means stay until the fun begins.Article Body:
Is your agility dog struggling to stay at the starting line? My Border Collie, Rip, began breaking her start-line stays after about a year of trialing. I needed to figure out why her behavior was changing.Initially, I asked Rip for a sit-stay, but she started leaning and scooting, so I switched to a down-stay. This worked for a while, but then she began to crawl. To help her hold her position, I stayed face-to-face during the lead-out. Eventually, she began breaking away entirely when I moved from her side, and that’s when I decided to pull her from trialing.
Why did her behavior worsen? I inadvertently taught her that start-line behavior was negotiable. When I allowed her to deviate from the initial sit-stay, she learned that I didn't always mean what I said during trials. Dogs will test boundaries if allowed.
If your dog starts breaking their stay?"whether it's a stand, sit, or down?"stop immediately. Don’t proceed with the run. While entry fees are a consideration, fixing a worsening problem will be more costly and time-consuming. For some dogs, leaving the course is deterrent enough. Others might need in-ring training, even if it means being excused from the ring. The crucial lesson here is that the fun only begins when the stay is solid.
