Trainer William H. Turner continued a cautious approach, entering Seattle Slew's first race as a three-year-old on March 9, 1977. He triumphed at Hialeah by nine lengths, then followed with a win at the Flamingo Stakes by four. On April 23, he secured the Wood Memorial Stakes by 3¼ lengths.
Arriving at the Kentucky Derby on May 7 as the overwhelming 1-2 favorite, Seattle Slew faced unexpected challenges. A rough start saw him swerve sharply, but he recovered to claim victory by 1¾ lengths. At the Preakness two weeks later, he again faced stiff competition, winning by 1½ lengths.
Conquering the Belmont
Concerns arose about his stamina for the Belmont Stakes, but Seattle Slew silenced doubters with a decisive four-length victory. This triumph made him the 10th Triple Crown winner and the first to achieve it undefeated.
Seattle Slew retired at the close of the 1978 season, leaving an indelible mark on horse racing history.
