Article
The growing affection for pets in the U.S. has led to a surge in spending on unique and creative pet products. From self-washing, toilet-shaped cat litter boxes and strollers for dogs to tennis ball-launching golf clubs and high-tech grooming tools, these offerings are making waves.
The Global Pet Expo, the largest annual trade show in the pet industry, recently showcased these and many other products. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), spending on pets has reached a record $38.4 billion this year.
Here's how these billions are being allocated:
- Food: $15.2 billion
- Supplies and over-the-counter medications: $9.3 billion
- Veterinarian care: $9.4 billion
- Live animal purchases: $1.8 billion
- Other services: $2.7 billion
It's not just about essentials. The APPMA’s National Pet Owners Survey highlights that 27% of dog owners and 13% of cat owners purchase birthday presents for their pets. Additionally, 55% of dog owners and 37% of cat owners treat their pets with holiday gifts.
This surge in spending has inspired innovative products like low-maintenance aquariums, matching sunglasses for pets and their owners, pet spa treatments, laser toys for cats, and adjustable heating and massaging beds for dogs.
Industry experts note a trend towards humanizing pet products. APPMA President Bob Vetere says, "Both baby boomers and young professionals choosing careers over starting families are turning to pets. With their higher disposable incomes, these pets enjoy luxurious and high-tech items designed for convenience."
Pet owners in the APPMA survey express a deep bond with their animals, considering them best friends, companions, or even family members. Vetere shares a personal anecdote about his golden Lab, Dakota: "I can talk to him about any problem, and he just listens with a smile. It's like he says, 'Feel better now? Let’s go play.'"
He concludes, "We've evolved in how we treat our pets, and there's still ample opportunity for growth, benefiting both pets and owners."
