Fortunately, my mare was comfortable with this and allowed children from the yard to interact with her foal. The foal became accustomed to having her feet handled and enjoyed being groomed. With patience, she learned to walk calmly on a lead rope, drawn by her curiosity.
This training proved invaluable when I needed to bring them into the yard or stable for visits from the blacksmith or vet. As the foal grew, I taught her to respect my space to prevent any accidental bumps that could knock me over.
We shared a lot of joyful moments during her time with me, and although parting with her was heart-wrenching, I felt content seeing her confidently trot into the trailer heading back to the farm where my mare originated.
I’m confident that the foal will approach her future learning experiences with the same trust and confidence, growing to be as kind and gentle as her mother.
