Growing up with dogs taught me to cherish and care for animals. I'll never forget watching our Boston Terrier comfort my younger brother, who was crying on the floor. Dogs have always been a comforting presence in my life.
Today, my friend came over to walk the dogs. As she stood at the door, Peanut, my 12-pound dachshund, eagerly stood up to lick her face. While some articles from a dog-focused site I follow suggest that this isn't ideal behavior, I can't help but see it differently.
Peanut and Bark, my dachshunds, often shower me with kisses when I'm in bed. Peanut even climbs onto my chest to ensure my whole face gets a wash, eyes included. Though it happens occasionally, I cherish these moments because they're my dogs. Bark licks my husband more in bed, as I'm often available to cuddle with them during the day.
Articles often suggest that jumping up is undesirable and that dogs should calmly accept a pat on the head. However, when my dogs enthusiastically greet each other after just ten minutes apart, it seems natural for them to do the same with us.
I've decided that, despite what articles suggest, I'm all for my dachshunds jumping up and licking my face. They're simply being dogs, and this is their way of saying hello. If their playful greetings make me smile and laugh, it can't be all that bad!
