Cats & Dogs: Are They Soul Mates?

Summary

Why do some cats and dogs become best friends while others can't stand each other? This heartwarming story of a dog and a cat won't answer that question, but it will certainly warm your heart!

The Tale of Keisha and Her Feline Friends

I've often heard that Chows have cat-like demeanors. Having had two Chows myself, I can attest to this! However, I was completely unprepared for my current Chow’s affection for cats. My previous dog behaved as most do, chasing cats on sight. So, imagine my surprise when my new puppy showed a fascination for our feline friends.

Keisha, my beloved pup, was just five months old when she met Pongo, a cat who was also five months old. We were visiting family in Omaha, Nebraska for Christmas, and Keisha was determined to befriend Pongo. Unfortunately, Pongo wanted none of it.

For three days, they cautiously circled each other, eventually coming nose to nose. Then, on Boxing Day, after a lunch of turkey sandwiches, we heard a crash in the kitchen. Assuming it was nothing major, we took our time to investigate. When we finally arrived, we found them?"Pongo and Keisha?"nibbling on the turkey someone had knocked to the floor. They were enjoying a fine feast together! Despite this teamwork, Pongo remained hesitant, though he seemed to warm up to Keisha after realizing she hadn’t eaten him along with the turkey.

Our visit ended before their bond truly formed, and we haven’t seen Pongo since. Yet, Keisha still reacts with excitement to his name, even after three years.

Now nearly four years old, Keisha has attempted to make friends with every cat she meets, though none were interested. That is, until she met Mojo.

Enter Mojo

Mojo belongs to a neighbor and is a confident outdoor cat. He struts around the neighborhood like he owns it, fully living up to his name. Initially, Keisha approached Mojo with caution, and he would swat at her playfully?"?"never using his claws. Gradually, the two came closer. Their interactions were almost ritualistic as they playfully danced around each other.

They progressed from cautious approaches to playful gestures?"Mojo purring and rolling over, Keisha sniffing his belly. Mojo began walking around and under Keisha, teasingly brushing her with his tail. Triumphing over this cheeky gesture, Keisha always maintained her dignified composure. Over time, Mojo even began joining us on our walks and would wait at our door for Keisha to come out and play. They playfully engage in games of chase that Mojo often instigates. Despite the size difference?"Mojo's 10 pounds versus Keisha's 60?"Mojo is undoubtedly the alpha in their bond.

Witnessing their friendship is a delight for the entire neighborhood. It’s enchanting to see two animals who by nature might be adversaries become such loyal companions.

Reflections on Furry Friendships

Watching Keisha and Mojo together makes one wonder why some cats and dogs harmonize so well, while others clash. Could it be a connection from a past life? Early influences like Pongo? Perhaps Keisha has a feline soul? Or do they simply have unique personalities and perspectives?

Whatever the reason, their friendship is a poignant reminder of the magical bonds that can form between unexpected companions. Seeing them together never fails to warm my heart, truly embodying the notion of soul mates in action.
