I've often heard that Chows have cat-like demeanors. Having had two Chows myself, I can attest to this! However, I was completely unprepared for my current Chow’s affection for cats. My previous dog behaved as most do, chasing cats on sight. So, imagine my surprise when my new puppy showed a fascination for our feline friends.
Keisha, my beloved pup, was just five months old when she met Pongo, a cat who was also five months old. We were visiting family in Omaha, Nebraska for Christmas, and Keisha was determined to befriend Pongo. Unfortunately, Pongo wanted none of it.
For three days, they cautiously circled each other, eventually coming nose to nose. Then, on Boxing Day, after a lunch of turkey sandwiches, we heard a crash in the kitchen. Assuming it was nothing major, we took our time to investigate. When we finally arrived, we found them?"Pongo and Keisha?"nibbling on the turkey someone had knocked to the floor. They were enjoying a fine feast together! Despite this teamwork, Pongo remained hesitant, though he seemed to warm up to Keisha after realizing she hadn’t eaten him along with the turkey.

Their interactions were almost ritualistic as they playfully danced around each other.
They progressed from cautious approaches to playful gestures?"Mojo purring and rolling over, Keisha sniffing his belly. Mojo began walking around and under Keisha, teasingly brushing her with his tail. Triumphing over this cheeky gesture, Keisha always maintained her dignified composure. Over time, Mojo even began joining us on our walks and would wait at our door for Keisha to come out and play. They playfully engage in games of chase that Mojo often instigates. Despite the size difference?"Mojo's 10 pounds versus Keisha's 60?"Mojo is undoubtedly the alpha in their bond.
Witnessing their friendship is a delight for the entire neighborhood. It’s enchanting to see two animals who by nature might be adversaries become such loyal companions.
