Dr. Robert A. Indeglia, a respected cardiac surgeon with a passion for purebred dogs, has been chosen to judge Best in Show at the 131st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The event will be hosted on February 12-13, 2007, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
A Rhode Island native residing in Narragansett, Dr. Indeglia is the senior surgeon and chief of cardiac surgery at The Miriam Hospital, affiliated with Brown University. His journey in the world of dogs began with his family's Cockers, and in 1960, he started working with Norwegian Elkhounds. Over the years, he has bred or owned 50 champions and served as president of the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America. Since starting his judging career in 1971, he has judged at Westminster seven times, including the Hound Group in 1996 and the Non-Sporting Group in 2003.
Dr. Indeglia will lead a panel of 35 judges from 14 states, Canada, and England. Notable group judges include Mrs. Jeannette McGinnis (Sporting), Mr. Michael J. Dougherty (Hound), Ms. Jean Fournier (Working), Mrs. James Edward Clark (Terrier), Mr. R. William Taylor (Toy), Mr. Richard L. Bauer (Non-Sporting), and Mr. Eric J. Ringle (Herding). Mr. Nicholas P. Urbanek will oversee the Junior Showmanship Finals.
The competition will feature 165 breeds and varieties. Founded in 1877, the Westminster Kennel Club is the oldest organization in the U.S. dedicated to purebred dogs. Its all-breed dog show, held annually at Madison Square Garden, is the country's second-longest continuously held sporting event, second only to the Kentucky Derby.
The Group competition and Best in Show will be broadcast live on USA Network, with additional streaming highlights available on the Westminster website. This feature allows dog enthusiasts to watch breed judging, attracting viewers from over 140 countries.
This year, a Komondor is among the 165 eligible breeds poised to compete at the 131st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
