Belgian Laekenois: The Rare Belgian Sheepdog
The Belgian Laekenois, pronounced LAK-in-wah, is a unique and rare breed among the Belgian Sheepdogs. This medium-sized dog typically weighs between 50-65 pounds and stands 22 to 26 inches tall. Despite being bred primarily for herding sheep, the Laekenois continues to serve as a working breed today.
Interestingly, the Belgian Laekenois is the only one among the four Belgian Sheepdogs not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Their coat colors range from red to fawn, mahogany to gray, and may feature a distinctive dark mask on the face. The breed is known for its harsh, rough, wiry coat, which is over two inches in length and gives them an endearing, tousled look. The waterproof coat requires minimal grooming and should not be clipped closely; regular bathing is also unnecessary.
Energetic and intelligent, the Belgian Laekenois thrives as a working dog rather than a conventional family pet. They excel as farm dogs, herding dogs, and watchdogs, and can also be wonderful companions for active families. With their high energy levels, these dogs need plenty of space to run and play and are not suited for indoor-only lifestyles. Early socialization with other pets and people, along with proper training, is essential, as they have a natural herding instinct and may try to herd both family members and animals.
Originating in Belgium, this breed was initially used to guard linen bleaching fields before transitioning into sheep herding and guard duties. Although they are often recognized as distinct breeds, the four Belgian Sheepdogs are considered a single breed in some countries.
The Belgian Laekenois thrives on work and activity, embodying the motto "work, work, and more work." They are happiest when they have tasks to accomplish, making them unsuitable for families who prefer relaxing indoors. For those who can meet their energetic and work-oriented nature, the Belgian Laekenois makes a devoted and lively companion.
