Aggression When Another Dog Invades Her Space
Introduction
Dear Adam,
I have a 3-year-old Australian Cattle Dog who's wonderfully obedient and even certified as a Canine Good Citizen. She's great with people but quite dominant around other dogs. Recently, she's been snapping at dogs that approach her while she's on a leash. However, if I ask her to sit and other dogs maintain a respectful distance, there's no issue. Being only 35 pounds, most dogs tower over her, which doesn't help as she dislikes them invading her space?"what I humorously call her "Napoleon Complex."
To tackle this, I've used a muzzle during training setups to correct her behavior. When muzzled, she refrains from asserting dominance, as she knows she can’t challenge other dogs. We've started therapy dog training classes, and she's excelling there.
Concerns and Considerations
Around people, she's perfect. In therapy settings, it's unlikely she'll encounter dogs that close. However, should such a situation arise, I worry about her snapping. I can usually prevent these situations, but there are inevitable instances. Any advice? I'm considering whether to continue her therapy classes.
Thank you,
Katie
Advice
Dear Katie,
This issue largely involves handler management. It's crucial to prevent other dogs from entering her space. While you can correct her aggression, she needs to trust you to protect her from strange dogs approaching. As the pack leader, it's your role to ensure this protection. Consider using a walking stick for extra assurance.
Regarding the therapy dog training, I suggest you continue. However, since I haven't seen the dog in person, you'll need to decide what's best for both of you.
Best,
Adam
