When Grandparents Take on Parenting Again
As the first wave of Baby Boomers reaches 60, the nation is witnessing the implications of an aging population. With life expectancy now nearly 78, those nearing retirement are planning ahead financially, emotionally, and physically. However, some face an unexpected challenge: raising their grandchildren.
According to a 2002 U.S. Census Bureau report, 5.7 million grandparents in the U.S. live with their grandchildren, and over 2.5 million are the primary guardians. The number of grandparents in this role increased by 30% between 1990 and 2000.
Take the Py family, for example. They faced unthinkable loss when their son-in-law passed away from a brain aneurysm, and just 14 months later, their daughter succumbed to breast cancer. Suddenly, their grandchildren were left in their care.
Many grandparents, like the Pys, turn to Mooseheart Child City and School, a nonprofit organization offering residential care and education for children and teens in need, as an alternative to state foster care.
"Many families, including grandparents, choose us because we provide a nurturing environment and a solid education," says Scott Hart, the nonprofit's administrator. "It's a tough decision, but students thrive here because we help them reach their fullest potential."
Funded by the 1.3 million members of the Moose organization, Mooseheart accepts applications from all families with children in need. Hart emphasizes that the community helps children transform hardships into triumphs?"a lesson the Py family experienced firsthand.
Following their tragedy, their home was transformed by ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," including a private "Moose" office, as the entire family actively volunteers for the Moose organization.
"Our society's grandparents are increasingly raising their grandchildren," Hart encourages. "They must know they're not alone."
