Do I believe that violent video games are harmful to young kids? Absolutely.
It’s common sense that 8-year-olds shouldn’t be exposed to intense digital violence. Most people would agree that games depicting extreme violence aren’t suitable for children.
However, this article isn’t about censoring games or forcing creators to make all content family-friendly.
As an adult, I have the choice to engage in games with graphic content if I wish. I fulfilled my obligations growing up, and I’m entitled to enjoy digital shootouts featuring axe-wielding zombies or armored assault bots.
But back to the main point: violent games are not appropriate for young kids. That's why the video game industry uses the ESRB (Entertainment Software Ratings Board) system, similar to film ratings. Concerned parents can easily check a game’s rating on the case to determine if it’s suitable for their child.
ESRB Ratings:
- EC: Early Childhood
- E: Everyone
- T: Teen
- M: Mature 17+
- AO: Adults Only 18+
Retailers often enforce age checks for higher-rated games. The ESRB also provides descriptions like Blood and Gore, Language, or Mature Humor to clarify ratings.
There’s no excuse for kids accessing inappropriate content when parents are attentive to these ratings. It’s vital to prevent exposure to inappropriate material early on. Instead of blaming game producers, I urge parents to use the rating system effectively to avoid issues from the start.
