"Don't worry about it. I've got it this time. Next one is on you." These words might sound amusing, but they raise eyebrows when coming from your 14-year-old unemployed son, confidently handing over his credit card to settle the lunch bill.
There's an emerging trend of teens using credit or debit cards. This trend prompts two crucial questions: Is giving your teen a credit card a good idea? And, is it as widespread as your teen claims?
In a 2005 poll by Junior Achievement, 11% of 1,065 high school students, aged 13 to 18+, reported having their own credit cards. Remarkably, 81.7% of them said they paid off the balance in full each month.
Credit card companies like Visa Buxx offer pre-paid cards for teens, branding them as an effective financial education tool. They are touted as safer and more convenient than cash, allowing parents to track spending online. For teens, these cards provide independence, flexibility (usable wherever Visa debit cards are accepted), and a sense of financial responsibility.
However, these benefits come with a cost. Setting up the account is $12, adding funds costs $2 each time, and there are fees for balance inquiries, ATM withdrawals, and other actions. It could quickly become expensive. Wouldn’t simply giving your teen an additional $22 be more cost-effective?
Call me old-fashioned, but I believe in the power of cash. It’s universally accepted, an excellent educational tool, and enforces budgeting. Teens can’t overspend if they only have a limited amount of cash. Unlike with a Visa Buxx card, which could cost parents $20 when a teen exceeds their limit, cash forces a young person to make thoughtful decisions: Do I really need this? Can I find a cheaper option?
That said, many mature and responsible teens can manage a Visa Buxx or similar card effectively. However, I prefer my teens to be gainfully employed and fully grasp the value of money before they start using plastic.
