Understanding Stuttering in Children
When a child begins to stutter, it often surprises everyone involved, leading to a stressful situation for both parents and the child.
I personally began stuttering at around four or five years old. My mother had taken a break from work to care for me after I was born, and my speech developed normally. Everything was going smoothly until I started school. With more time on her hands, my mother resumed work and arranged for me to stay with a family friend, Jean, after school. Jean had a son my age named Graham. Initially, everything seemed fine at her house until dinnertime. Unlike the relaxed meals at my home, Jean’s family ate together in a formal dining room setting, surrounded by people I didn’t know well. The unfamiliar environment made me uncomfortable. When asked questions during the meal, I struggled to respond and began to stutter. This was the beginning of my journey with stuttering.
A few months later, my parents took me to a speech therapist who reassured them that most children eventually outgrow stuttering. Unfortunately, I continued to stutter until I was 22. At that point, I was determined to overcome it.
Taking matters into my own hands, I sought solutions to my stuttering. I began by reading books on self-confidence, recognizing my low self-esteem as a contributing factor. I also observed and analyzed effective speakers, noting how their breathing and speaking patterns differed from mine.
After nearly a year of persistent effort, I proudly achieved fluency. Now, as a career, I help others attain similar success in overcoming stuttering.
