Kids Aren't Getting Enough Sleep, Say Experts
Recent findings from a National Sleep Foundation poll have confirmed longstanding concerns among sleep specialists: children are not getting adequate sleep.
The study highlights that children under 10 are not meeting the minimum recommended sleep hours. It also reveals a gap in parental awareness about the necessary amount of sleep for their kids.
Jodi A. Mindell, chair of the poll's task force, emphasizes the importance of focusing equally on sleep and waking hours for children. "It's evident that children are not getting the sleep they need," Mindell states.
Arthur Grehan, executive director of the American Innerspring Manufacturers, notes that this issue has been overlooked for years. "Our industry has dedicated resources to educating families about the importance of sleep in both homes and classrooms," Grehan says.
What can parents do? First, they need to understand how much sleep their children require. According to the National Sleep Foundation, preschoolers need 11 to 13 hours of sleep daily, while school-age children (first- through fifth-graders) should get 10 to 11 hours.
Grehan suggests that old or inappropriate mattresses may also impact sleep quality. AIM advises that children sleep on regular innerspring mattresses no older than eight years.
"Many toddlers and preschoolers transition from cribs to thin foam mattresses that came with youth furniture. Some kids are using hand-me-down mattresses over a decade old," Grehan explains. "Ultimately, ensuring a child gets a good night's sleep allows parents to rest easy too."
