Seeing large poster boards sparked a thought: create a chart to engage my kids and help them take ownership of their responsibilities in a fun way. With this in mind, I grabbed a few pieces of white poster board and headed home, ready to implement the chart system with my four young children.
The beauty of the chart system lies in its flexibility. You can tailor your chart to address any skills or responsibilities you want your children to focus on. For instance, the section on potty training for my two-year-old looks quite different from my eight-year-old’s section on making her bed daily. Consider what each child needs to work on and choose four or five specific tasks for each. Then, create a chart displaying each child’s name alongside the tasks you want them to complete.
My chart resembles a graph, featuring each child’s name, four or five tasks, and spaces for each day of the week. My children understand what’s expected, and they get to place a sticker of their choice in the space once they complete a task. The excitement of filling up their columns means they rarely complain about daily chores. Additionally, there’s a reward for completing all the tasks on the chart each week. Rewards vary based on each child’s age and preferences, ensuring they’re motivated to embrace new responsibilities joyfully.
I encourage all parents to try the chart system and watch as their children enjoy seeing their progress with stickers.
