Potty training is an important milestone in a toddler's life. For our son’s first birthday, we got him the book Once Upon a Potty, which he enjoyed, especially the story of Joshua learning to use the potty. My mother gifted him a DVD titled I Gotta Go! and a potty chair when he was about 1.5 years old, which introduced him to the idea by occasionally sitting him on it.
However, these efforts weren't enough to encourage consistent potty use. The real breakthrough came through a tip from another mom at Kindermusik. She shared that she used M&Ms as a reward for her son each time he used the potty. I decided to try it, and remarkably, my son started using the potty consistently that very day. Within a couple of weeks, we phased out the M&Ms, and he continued to use it on his own.
Every child is unique and will be ready at their own pace. Here are some signs that might indicate readiness:
1. Ability to understand and follow simple instructions.
2. Regular bowel movements.
3. Staying dry for about two hours at a time.
4. Having names for urine and bowel movements.
Most resources suggest that toddlers are generally ready between 18 and 24 months, but it’s not unusual for some to still use diapers until they are three. Training underwear offers a good middle ground by providing diaper-like protection while feeling more like real underwear. We used these until our son reliably communicated his need to go.
Eventually, he transitioned to using the regular toilet with a potty seat. He now confidently uses the big potty and no longer needs training underwear at night. He even wakes up to go if he needs to, and he's proud of himself for staying accident-free overnight.
Potty training can be challenging and requires consistent patience and understanding from parents. Every child is different, so take your time to discover what works best for yours. With persistence and encouragement, you will find the right approach to guide your toddler through this significant milestone.
