"There isn’t enough time, sweetheart. We need more time for each other," Karen responds. "I didn’t realize you loved to draw so much."
"Oh, I do, Mommy. Grandma lets me draw whenever I want," Anna shares enthusiastically.
"She does?"
"Yes, we went to the bookstore today and she bought me a coloring book."
"So that's what was in that bag. You've got a wonderful grandma," Karen says tenderly.
"I know. She told me you used to love drawing, too."
"That’s right," Karen says softly. "I did a lot of sketches."
"Sketches?" Anna asks.
"Yes, sketches are drawings with pencils. Want to try some at home?"
"Yes!" Anna replies excitedly.
At home, Anna proudly shows her mother the coloring book from her grandma while Karen searches for her old sketches. Anna brings a completed page to Karen, who showers her with kisses, praise, and encouragement.
Eventually, Karen finds her old sketches and heads to the kitchen, only to discover Anna has drawn on the cabinet doors.
"Isn’t it pretty, Mommy?" Anna asks.
Karen is momentarily speechless, stunned by the drawings on the white cabinets.
Anna breaks the silence, "Grandma’s kitchen is colorful. I want ours to be colorful. Do you like it, Mommy?"
Karen slides to the floor, overcome with emotion.
"You don’t like it, Mommy?" Anna asks.
"No, sweetheart. I love your drawings," Karen reassures her. "When I was your age, I did the same thing on Grandma’s walls."
"Did she like it?" Anna inquires.
Karen takes a deep breath, "She screamed at me for not following the rules and coloring on the paper."
"Did I mess up your cabinets?" Anna asks.
"No, sweetheart," Karen responds quickly. "Those cabinets needed some color. I want you to keep drawing, okay? I’ll get you bigger paper for even more beautiful pictures."
"Wow! I’ll make them prettier!" Anna says excitedly.
"Why did you stop drawing, Mommy?" Anna asks innocently.
Karen pauses, "Because what happened made me stop. But I'll explain when you're older. For now, keep drawing."
Through Anna, Karen rediscovers a passion she had set aside, realizing the importance of nurturing creativity and making time for what truly matters.
