Child Discipline What Really Works

Child Discipline: What Really Works?
Summary:
Disciplining children is often challenging for parents. While my son is generally well-behaved, his anger can sometimes be overwhelming. It’s crucial for children to understand that parents are in control.
Growing up, I remember receiving spankings until I was about six or seven. I made every effort to avoid angering my parents. Although I’ve seldom spanked my son, I’ve occasionally resorted to it when other methods failed. Nowadays, many parents seek alternative ways to discipline without using spanking.
By age four, children should be familiar with basic rules?"no more than four or five. Consistency is key: stand by these rules and review them with your child when they’re broken. Remember, you’re the parent, and your decisions matter.
Recognize and praise good behavior to reinforce the idea that positive actions are valued more than negative ones. We often focus more on scolding than on acknowledging good behavior. A simple "Thank you" can be incredibly encouraging.
Saying "no" can frustrate children as it denies them what they want. Use a firm but not angry tone to convey authority. Ensure your child understands that "no" means "no" and do not waver even if they plead persistently.
Help your child understand the consequences of their actions. For instance, if they’re playing too loudly while you’re resting, offer them choices like reading a book with you or playing quietly in their room until you’re ready.
A method my husband and I find effective is the time-out. Our son dislikes sitting still, so when he misbehaves or yells, we send him to a time-out area to reflect on his actions. When he’s ready, we discuss it together. This approach works for most instances of bad behavior.
