Campaign Aids Uninsured Children in Getting Health Care Coverage
As the new school year begins, millions of children are heading back without one crucial item?"health insurance.

To address this, the Covering Kids & Families Back-to-School campaign, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is working to inform parents, grandparents, and teachers about available low-cost or free health coverage. Many children qualify for Medicaid or the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which cover doctor visits, prescriptions, and hospital stays. This initiative aims to prioritize health insurance on the back-to-school checklist.
"As a physician and mother, I know that children with health coverage are better prepared for learning and success," says Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "Uninsured kids often don't receive treatment for childhood illnesses like sore throats, earaches, and asthma, which can escalate if untreated. These children are our future, and we must ensure they receive the necessary care."
Despite the availability of these programs in every state and the District of Columbia, many parents remain unaware of their eligibility. Working parents might assume they earn too much to qualify, yet families making up to $40,000 a year or more may meet the eligibility criteria, which depend on family size and income.
"Medicaid and SCHIP have already provided coverage to millions of children, but many more are still eligible," says Sarah Shuptrine, national program director of Covering Kids & Families. "Awareness is lacking, and working families often think their children aren’t eligible. Everyone can help ensure eligible kids are covered. Grandparents, in particular, can be instrumental in learning about and promoting these public health programs."
This campaign highlights the importance of making sure all children have access to the health care they need to thrive academically and in life.
