Are You Present With Your Children?

Summary:

Being truly present with our children is one of the greatest gifts we can offer, yet it often presents a significant challenge.

Article Body:

How often do you find yourself fully engaged when spending time with your children? Offering our complete presence is one of the most valuable gifts we can give them, despite the challenges it may present.

When my three children were young, I juggled a full-time job as a counselor, authored books, embarked on book tours, and pursued my passion for art, all while nurturing my marriage. To ensure I was genuinely present with my children, I dedicated specific times to be with them, focusing only on what they wanted to do. During these moments, I ignored phone calls and household responsibilities, centering my attention solely on them.

Failing to provide quality time sends a message to your children that they are not a priority. If our focus shifts to phone calls, to-do lists, or the needs of tomorrow instead of being with our children, they might feel that their presence is not valued.

Reflecting on my childhood, I remember my mother constantly being busy. She rarely found time to engage with me about my thoughts, feelings, or experiences at school. Despite her verbal expressions of love, I seldom felt it. Words fall short without corresponding actions.

If sharing experiences, having conversations, or simply enjoying each other's company isn’t important to you, your children might not feel loved. No matter how many gifts or expressions of love you offer, if you don’t prioritize being truly present, they may not feel cherished.

Children crave focused attention. Without it, they might seek it through various behaviors. They might chatter endlessly or act out, opting for negative attention rather than none. This can create a harmful cycle: the more they misbehave, the less inclined you might be to spend time with them, and the cycle intensifies when they continue to lack loving attention.

Consider the joy you feel when someone gives you their undivided attention. How often does someone really listen to you? Many people are so eager to be heard that they forget to listen in return.

Being fully present with your children can have an immeasurable positive impact. Many of my clients recall the significant influence of a friend or relative who truly listened to them, even if it was rare.

Each day, you have the opportunity to offer your children the gift of your presence?"filled with love, compassion, empathy, interest, humor, playfulness, and affection. Cherish these moments, even if they last only half an hour.

Children grow up quickly. Make sure you don’t miss the daily opportunity to truly be with them.
