The UK produces an enormous amount of textile waste each year, ranging from 550,000 to 900,000 tonnes. Shockingly, up to 700,000 tonnes of these textiles end up in landfills, despite the fact that half could be recycled.
One effective solution is to use textile banks or donate clothes to charity shops and jumble sales. Schools, with the support of PTAs, can establish second-hand uniform shops for everything from sweatshirts to blazers. Interestingly, junior and infant schools often excel at this more than senior schools.
Having run a school uniform business for some time, I am a strong supporter of recycling initiatives such as freecycle.org. Unfortunately, our country has developed into a throwaway culture. A small hole in a pair of trousers often leads to them being discarded, partly because many younger parents lack sewing skills or supplies.
