Isn’t It Interesting That You’re Never Bored When Your Head Is in the Refrigerator?
Summary:
We all know that staying slim means avoiding endless snacking. Yet, being stuck at home doing the same routine every day can be mind-numbing. As dancer/choreographer Monet Robier puts it, “Every day there must be something I can't do, otherwise it's boring.”Exploring a New Chapter
At 70, I retired, looking forward to the freedom of choosing how to spend my days. I indulged in daytime TV, crossword puzzles, newspapers, and kept in touch through email. I also played computer games and browsed the internet. Naturally, this led to more snacking?"especially during those aimless outings to the mall or supermarket, where I bought treats to lift my spirits.
I didn’t want to fall into the trap of just waiting for time to pass. A sense of depression loomed over me, and I realized I needed a fresh challenge.
One day, a friend called with an intriguing suggestion. The local Parks Department offered classes at a nearby Community Center. Skeptically, I decided to explore, eventually finding a low-impact aerobics class to help shed the weight I’d accumulated. I joined, enjoyed, and met wonderful people. Everyone was buzzing about a line dance class that sounded like a blast.
Rediscovering Dance
I grew up in the big band era, often being my brother's practice partner for the jitterbug. But as life moved on, I danced less and forgot how much joy it brought me. So, with a mix of excitement and nervousness, I joined the line dance class.
I quickly learned line dance involved more than country music; it included Mambo, Cha-Cha, and Waltz. I was thrilled but soon realized it wouldn’t be as easy as I thought. As the only beginner, I had no partner to guide me, and I found that my memory wasn’t as sharp as it used to be. Yet, I was determined to persevere. The dances involve repeating sequences, and keeping track of the steps became a fun challenge.
I embraced the philosophy of “dance as if no one is watching.” I laughed at my mistakes, stayed committed, and, eventually, everything clicked.
The Joy of Movement
The takeaway? Dance classes are far cheaper than doctor or psychiatrist visits?"and they offer a natural high. I lost weight, inches, and found myself eating healthier as I saw the numbers drop. Remarkably, my memory improved as I exercised my brain with each new dance.
At 75, I was even offered a job teaching line dancing through the Parks & Recreation Department. My students often compliment my youthful appearance and energy, which is always nice to hear.
I recently learned that Socrates took up dancing at 70, fearing he had neglected an essential part of himself. It’s amusing how, despite the aches and pains of age, I feel none of them while dancing. It must be that natural high.
Embrace something new, and you might just find your own way to stay slim, happy, and engaged.
