Escape to Serenity
Discover McLeod's Island
Have you ever yearned to escape from the everyday chaos? In March/April 1978, the story of a couple who did just that was featured on Mother Earth News. They purchased McLeod's Island, a serene 90-acre retreat off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
On this island, they've embraced a self-sufficient lifestyle with a few animals and minimal reliance on groceries. Their life on the island, however, isn't without its challenges:
"The sea, often described as 'restless,' has shown us why. A calm bay can suddenly transform into a turbulent mix of currents and waves. We've witnessed our bay freeze and thaw completely within a single day in December.
Winters here are unpredictable. During 1976, frequent spring-like thaws left the bay filled with slushy ice?"too thick to navigate by boat and too thin to walk on, even for a fox. We were isolated for three months. In contrast, last winter's severe cold froze the bay solid, allowing us to walk to the mainland for mail and supplies whenever we needed."
While the Internet now offers many of us the freedom to work from almost anywhere, this couple didn't have that luxury. Their current status is unknown?"perhaps the tides carried them away.
Life involves sacrifices; some are more significant than others. Yet, I doubt buying an island is in my future.
