Keep Mosquitoes Away This Year
Stay Mosquito-Free
This year, the warm and wet weather has brought the West Nile virus earlier than usual. Pools of standing water from recent rains have become prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes, including those that transmit the virus.
Since the West Nile virus first appeared in the U.S. in 1999, mosquitoes have posed more than just an annoyance. They’ve contributed to over 16,000 cases and 600 deaths nationwide. Although mosquitoes will be plentiful this summer, homeowners can take steps to reduce their populations:
Eliminate Standing Water
With an unusually wet spring, many yards have standing water. Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water, so eliminating it is crucial. Cover, empty, or remove containers holding water; clean gutters and drainage ditches; and refresh water in flower pots and birdbaths every three to four days.
Keep Water Moving
In cases where water can't be removed, like in pools and ponds, consider installing a water pump, fountain, or waterfall to create movement. Ensure swimming pools and hot tubs are chlorinated per the manufacturer's instructions and cover them when not in use to prevent mosquito habitats.
Seek Professional Help
Consult your local public health department or a pest control expert. They can help identify and treat mosquito habitats using eco-friendly larvicides that kill mosquito larvae before they mature into biting adults. Additionally, confirm with your local health department that larvicides are applied near your home and within your community.
By taking these steps, you can enjoy a mosquito-free summer and protect yourself from the West Nile virus.
