Mysterious Black Eye and Sleepwalking Adventures
An Unexpected Morning Surprise
This week, I woke up with a black eye, and the mystery of how it happened continues to baffle me. I have my theories, but sometimes it's best to leave things as they are.
The Intrigues of Sleepwalking
As I've gotten older, I've noticed changes in my body, including a new habit of sleepwalking. While puzzling, it’s the only real exercise I get these days, so I’m trying not to complain. It’s somewhat reassuring to know that something is working, even if it's unconscious. My sleepwalking has become so frequent that I’ve taken to wearing sneakers to bed. Naturally, I don’t wear much else, and when I find myself wandering three blocks away, those sneakers need to be quick!
The Black Eye Mystery
Sleepwalking is manageable, except for the unexplained black eye.
Midnight Conversations
In addition to walking, my wife claims I also talk in my sleep. Frankly, it's the only time I can get a word in edgewise! I suppose I’m trying to make up for my daytime silence. I've been talking so much at night that I wake up with a sore throat, which might explain my increasing appetite.
Sadly, my nightly chatter is keeping my wife awake. She's suggested I preach in my sleep to help her nod off.
Falling Asleep ?" More Complicated Than It Seems
I once struggled to fall asleep at night. Counting sheep didn’t help?"they were too noisy, and I started worrying about their care. I aim for 40 winks, but I lose count by 33. The older I get, the more my sleep resembles a tossed salad.
Midnight Noises and Other Perils
Noises in the night are my greatest frustration. Sleep accentuates every sound, from a dripping faucet to a creaking shutter, just as I’m about to drift off. Though we haven’t seen any signs of mice, I often hear them gnawing in the walls as if they’re targeting my slumber.
Achieving Restfulness
Despite various attempts, falling asleep remains a challenge. I fall asleep easily in the afternoon, enjoying what I call “power naps,” though my wife has a different?"and unrepeatable?"name for them.
I’ve tried preparing for bed by putting shoes and socks beside me. It had the desired effect, but also disturbed my bedmate.
No matter how long I sleep, I always crave just one more minute. I can hear a distant drip but not the alarm clock by my head, and dawn always wakes me.
Cocoa and Scriptures
My wife suggested drinking hot cocoa before bed, which mostly works. The only challenge is staying awake long enough to finish without spilling it on myself!
I’m reminded of Psalm 127:2: "It is vain to rise early, sit up late, eating the bread of sorrows: for he gives his beloved sleep.” And Psalm 121:3-4 reassures me that God never slumbers.
Solving the Black Eye Mystery
As for my black eye, I have no memory of how it happened. My wife explained that during a sleepwalking episode, I walked into the bathroom door. While I can’t dispute her, I did notice her gently rubbing her right fist.
In the end, some mysteries might be best left unsolved.
