There's nothing quite like a brisk winter walk. While summer offers enticing seas and countless opportunities for ice cream as you stroll in your shorts and t-shirt, it also brings heat, humidity, and crowded coastlines. Parking can be challenging during those months. Today, however, is a different story. We've snagged one of many available free seaside spots in New Polzeath. Our vantage point is perfect for perusing the newspaper, watching surfers, and enjoying a pre-walk coffee at the Doom Bar in the Atlantic Hotel.

The Walk
You'll be grateful for a woolly hat to keep your ears warm and your hair from obstructing the stunning views. Conversation may be swept away by the wind, but it’s refreshing to be in your own world for a while. Departing from Polzeath, we head along the coast path to Pentireglaze Haven. The soft sand underfoot invites beachcombing, though we find mostly small mussels and plenty of kelp, along with an enviable cottage at the beach's edge.
Leaving the beach, we ascend the hillside, bidding farewell to our calm starting point. A descent reveals a small pebbly cove. Although tempted by the grassy path leading to Pentire Farm, we resist, knowing we'll pass through on our return.
As we climb, the effort pays off with expansive sea views, featuring Stepper Point’s daymark and Trevose Head’s lighthouse. To the south, the deserted sand stretch of Harbour Cove waits for summer visitors. Inland, hay bales dot the green fields, contrasting the dreary sea. A large hairy caterpillar in the undergrowth catches our eye, leading to a game of “spot the caterpillar.”
Passing a National Trust sign, we are directed uphill to the Tumuli?"a prehistoric burial ground cloaked in heather.
At Pentire Point, barren volcanic rock forms the headland. Look carefully, and you’ll spot ancient gas bubbles in the rocks. Offshore, Newland Rock stands, while Rumps Point resembles a stegosaurus with its jagged rocks. Exploring Rumps offers pockets of shelter, but the views improve the higher you climb.
On the uniquely shaped Rumps headland are remnants of an Iron-Age cliff castle, protected by a triple rampart and ditch system. We explore stone circles, imagining ancient inhabitants admiring the same views. The hills here could tell tales of first-century BC pottery, hinting at Mediterranean trade. Behind the eastern headland, The Mouls rock serves as a breeding site for puffins, gannets, and kittiwakes.
Return Journey
Heading back, you might be tempted to roll down the steep hills. Continue your circular route, following the stone wall to a junction, and then bear right to begin your inward loop.
As you approach Pentire Farm, an information board highlights that the peninsula is a working farm producing beef, corn, and sheep, which we’ve seen along our walk. Though the farmyard is quiet, cream teas are available in season.
Descending to our starting point, we relish the tranquility before tackling the final uphill stretch to the car. En route to Trebetherick, we pass the Mowhay Café and Gallery, a warm and welcoming spot that feels like stepping into someone’s living room. Here, we enjoy a delicious lunch before heading home, ready to curl up by the fire, content from the invigorating fresh air.
