In November 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt embarked on a hunting trip to Mississippi. The excursion combined business and pleasure, as he aimed to resolve a boundary dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana while indulging in his passion for hunting.
On this particular outing, Roosevelt's hunt proved unfruitful. In a bid to please him, his staff captured a Louisiana black bear cub and tied it to a tree for Roosevelt to shoot. However, the accomplished outdoorsman found no sport in shooting a defenseless cub and chose to spare its life.
This act of mercy inspired Clifford Berryman, a renowned political cartoonist for the Washington Star. Berryman created a cartoon titled "Drawing The Line In Mississippi," depicting the President refusing to shoot the bear. The cartoon symbolized Roosevelt’s approach to the boundary dispute and featured him turning away from a cowering bear.
Brooklyn toy store owner Morris Michtom saw the cartoon and had an idea. He placed it beside a hand-sewn stuffed bear, crafted by his wife, in his shop window. To his surprise, customers were eager to purchase the bear.
Michtom sought and received Roosevelt’s permission to use his name for the stuffed bears. Thus, the "Teddy Bear" was born. Demand soared, prompting Michtom and his wife to produce thousands. With the profits, they established the Ideal Toy Company.
Today, Teddy Bears remain beloved companions for children worldwide. Their enduring appeal never fades, embodying a true classic, bolstered by a touch of presidential history.
