Are Toys for Men or Boys?
Summary:
With the ever-evolving world of toys and gadgets, it's hard to decipher who the target audience really is.
Recently, my 9-year-old son, Jack, received some exciting gifts from Santa: an iPod and a PSP?"exactly like the ones I got. Having grown up playing games, I adore the PSP; it's the kind of toy I dreamed about as a child. As for the iPod, I can’t imagine enduring my bus rides without it now.
But at what age do we move from children's toys to adult gadgets? It feels like just yesterday I was buying toys for Jack in kids' stores. I remember getting him a painting easel not long ago, and now he’s interested in the same gadgets as me.
Is Jack growing up too quickly, or am I not growing up fast enough? Perhaps society is evolving so rapidly that age differences are starting to blur. Can technology be the bridge across the generational divide? Will we soon see a universal gadget that captivates both young and old alike?
I'm amazed by the constant stream of new products on the market. Just yesterday, I discovered the new Sony Walkman phone online. It's not just a phone; it combines the functions of an iPod and a PSP with 2GB of memory. It connects to your computer, plays MP3s in your car, and offers games better than those I played as a kid.
I used to think the PSP was the ultimate gadget I desired as a child. Now, these multifunctional devices are the true dream. What incredible technology will surprise me next?
I'm sure Jack will introduce me to the next tech marvel. When I was young, there were distinct lines between adult and children's items. But today, we share the same interests. Jack can outperform me in any game on our linked PSPs and even taught me to transfer music to my iPod.
Perhaps the real question isn't if technology elevates kids to the level of adults, but rather if it places them on an even higher plane than us.
