Care and Maintenance for Butcher Block Countertops and Kitchen Islands
Introduction
Wood is widely regarded as one of the healthiest building materials available. Solid wood is not only reliable and sturdy but can also endure for many years with minimal protection. However, being a natural material, wood reacts uniquely to different environments. Here's a guide on maintaining and caring for solid wood countertops, island tops, and butcher blocks to ensure they remain beautiful and durable.
Mineral Oil Finish
Application:
To protect your wood surfaces, oil them thoroughly on all sides, especially focusing on the end-grain areas, which absorb moisture more readily. Every cut or adjustment, such as sink cutouts, should be oiled meticulously. We recommend using Proterra mineral oil from Hesse, Germany, which is safe for food contact. For areas with high humidity, like around sinks, supplement mineral oil with a polyurethane finish for enhanced protection.
How to Apply:
Using a soft brush, generously apply the oil to all surfaces or pour a small amount directly and spread it with the brush. Allow the wood to absorb the oil for 20-30 minutes, then wipe away any excess with a paper towel. Initially, apply 2-3 coats, then reapply every few months or as needed. Sand any scratched or cut areas before reapplying oil.
Maintenance
Cleaning:
Regularly remove food residues by scraping or brushing. Wash with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly with a cloth or paper towels. Reapply oil when necessary. For added protection, mix a 1:4 ratio of beeswax and mineral oil, warm it until homogenized, and spread it evenly over the surface.
Precautions:
Avoid placing wood surfaces near extreme heat sources without proper insulation. Keep vinegar away from oiled wood, as it can cause warping or cracking. Do not use corrosive chemicals or harsh detergents, as they may cause irreversible damage.
Repairing
Cupping and Warping:
These issues occur when there is uneven moisture exposure between the top and bottom of the wood. Place the concave side down on a hard surface, weighted down with heavy objects, for up to 12 hours to straighten. Then, re-oil the surface thoroughly.
If repositioning isn’t feasible, apply mineral oil to the concave side repeatedly until straight.
End Splits:
These happen when wood is too dry and not sealed properly. Repair by mixing wood sand with water-based wood glue; fill cracks, let cure for 15-20 minutes, then sand with 120-grit paper and oil generously.
Scratches and Stains:
Sand the affected area uniformly, remove dust, and apply a fresh coat of mineral oil. Finger-jointed panels can be sanded to a 3/8" depth, but there are no such limitations for continuous lamella and end-grain butcher blocks.
Polyurethane Finish
Surfaces finished with polyurethane require no regular maintenance, but repairs for scratches or marks can be challenging, so handle with care.
By following these guidelines, your butcher block countertops and kitchen islands will maintain their appearance and functionality for many years.
