As I grow older, I notice my body's becoming less toned. I dream of having a swimming pool for two main reasons: to improve my fitness through regular swimming and to feel more confident when swimming without the awkwardness of using a public pool.
Last summer, I traveled across Europe, beginning in rainy London. My journey took me through France, where I stayed in a charming farmhouse with its own pool, and finally to Spain’s Costa del Sol. There, I spent three weeks in a beautiful villa nestled in the Andalusian mountains, offering stunning sea and mountain vistas and, of course, a private swimming pool.
Both pools were self-built and unique. In Spain, the villa's owner, John, a former builder from London, constructed his pool measuring 25 by 32 feet. Though it lacked symmetry and even flooring, its rustic charm made it the best pool I’ve ever experienced.
In Spain, I intended to explore but ended up captivated by the pool. Set against converted stables and breathtaking scenery, its imperfect design was a perfect fit. While such a pool wouldn't suit a new-build home, it was ideal here.
France offered a more modern pool. It wasn't a formal design but fit beautifully into the countryside. This pool featured a unique structure: a shallow slope leading to a 12-foot depth with an underwater ledge around the edge. It made for endless fun with the kids and added to an unforgettable vacation.
Despite my long trip, I barely saw France or Spain beyond the roadways. The allure of those fantastic pools kept me nearby, making me realize a pool might be essential for my home too. Perhaps in the future, I'll even try a lakeside cabin. For now, though, building my own swimming pool seems like the right path forward.
