The toilets we use today are relatively recent inventions and were once a privilege for the wealthy. Hygiene continues to be a priority, with innovations like self-cleaning public restrooms and a wide range of toilet cleaners and deodorizers.
The rise of indoor plumbing has mainly contributed to the widespread availability of household toilets. This plumbing ensures that our toilets function with the simple pull of a chain or press of a handle. Before the advent of indoor plumbing, toilets were located in outhouses separate from the main dwelling, with their water supply completely detached.
Early outhouses were rudimentary, often just a hole in the ground. Over time, wooden seats with openings were developed to allow people to sit rather than squat. Eventually, these facilities were enclosed for privacy. Wealthier individuals had the luxury of using chamber pots in their bedrooms. Made from ceramic, these pots were emptied by servants. As chamber pots gained popularity, finding places to empty them, especially in urban areas, became a challenge, leading to the unfortunate practice of throwing waste into the streets.
Thankfully, we've come a long way since the days of dodging waste being tossed from windows. Today’s toilets are a testament to human ingenuity and the ongoing pursuit of convenience and hygiene.
