It Was a Christmas Miracle!
As the holiday season approached, we found ourselves in a predicament. Just a week before Christmas, I was on the brink of frustration. Putting up our Christmas tree seemed to be more challenging than usual. Bah, Humbug!
That morning, my family and I set out on our annual adventure to find the perfect tree. I filled a thermos with hot apple cider, and with the kids bundled up, we set off. Our big old sleigh carried the three of them as my husband and I took turns pulling it through the forest behind our home. This tradition of choosing and cutting down our tree together has always been special to us.
Once back home, we let the tree thaw while we enjoyed lunch. I retrieved the decoration boxes from the basement, and we carefully placed the tree in its stand. As we began to string the lights, my husband suggested testing them first. I dismissed the idea, thinking it unnecessary, and proceeded to plug them in. To my dismay, nothing happened. Remarkably, he resisted saying, "I told you so."
Determined to find the faulty bulb, I removed the lights and spent the next hour replacing each one. Yet, still no result. My frustration grew, and I could feel my inner Scrooge emerging.
Meanwhile, my husband was absorbed in his computer game, and the kids were engaged in a snowball fight outside. I decided it was time for some Egg Nog. Returning, I found my husband examining each bulb. He explained that one bulb was disrupting the circuit, and assured me he’d solve the mystery. Five minutes later, the lights flickered to life. In his hand was a single troublesome bulb.
Modern bulbs have a standard filament and a secondary shunt wire to maintain the circuit if the filament fails. This one bulb's shunt wire was defective, causing all the trouble.
Soon after, we gathered around our beautifully lit tree, sipping hot cocoa. To me, it truly felt like a Christmas miracle!
