A Christmas Story: The First Christmas Lights
Exploring the Origins of Christmas Lights
Imagine a Christmas without the twinkling lights that adorn our trees and homes. It's hard to picture, isn't it? The history of Christmas lights is closely linked to the advent of electricity in homes, marking a transformative moment in holiday celebrations.
Thomas Edison, known for inventing the first functional light bulb in 1879, set the stage for this festive tradition. Just a few years later, in 1882, Edward Johnson, an associate of Edison, decided to illuminate his Christmas tree with electric lights. Situated in one of New York's first electrically wired neighborhoods, Johnson's home became the site of this pioneering display.
A reporter from "The Detroit Post and Tribune" described the scene: "Last evening, I visited Edward H. Johnson's residence, vice-president of Edison's electric company. In his elegant parlor stood a large Christmas tree, creating a magical and captivating sight. It was adorned with colorful globes, each the size of an English walnut, and revolved on a small stand. The tree boasted eighty lights encased in delicate glass, evenly divided among white, red, and blue hues. As it turned, the colors alternated, with all lights extinguishing and relighting every revolution. This produced a mesmerizing dance of colors?"red, white, blue?"throughout the evening."
By 1890, Edison circulated a promotional brochure, likely marking the debut of commercially available electric Christmas lights. He described them as "miniature incandescent lamps interwoven in garlands or festoons, perfect for decorating Christmas trees or conservatories."
This innovation quickly gained popularity, becoming an enduring symbol of the holiday season. Today, it's impossible to think of Christmas without these luminous decorations. Hats off to Edison and Johnson for gifting us a tradition we hold dear!
